I appreciate the “Monsters on Maple Street” reference as I cited it myself in one of my numerous feckless exchanges with Covidians on Nextdoor way back in 2020.

Here are some relevant quotes:

“You fools. You scared, frightened rabbits, you. You’re sick people, do you know that? You’re sick people—all of you! And you don’t even know what you’re starting because let me tell you … let me tell you—this thing you’re starting—that should frighten you. As God is my witness … you’re letting something begin here that’s a nightmare!”

“Let’s get it all out. Let’s pick out every idiosyncrasy of every single man, woman, and child on the street. And then we might as well set up some kind of a kangaroo court. How about a firing squad at dawn, Charlie, so we can get rid of all the suspects? Narrow them down. Make it easier for you.”

“They pick the most dangerous enemy they can find, and it’s themselves. And all we need do is sit back … and watch.”

“Their world is full of Maple Streets. And we’ll go from one to the other and let them destroy themselves. One to the other … one to the other … one to the other—”

Closing narration:

“The tools of conquest do not necessarily come with bombs and explosions and fallout. There are weapons that are simply thoughts, attitudes, prejudices—to be found only in the minds of men. For the record, prejudices can kill and suspicion can destroy, and a thoughtless, frightened search for a scapegoat has a fallout all of its own for the children … the children yet unborn. [A pause.] And the pity of it is … that these things cannot be confined to The Twilight Zone!”

Great quotes! One of the best episodes of one of the best shows ever. Some other relevant episodes: No Time Like The Past, The Obsolete Man, People Are Alike All Over, He's Alive, and A Quality of Mercy which Benny N. should watch but probably wouldn't understand anyway.

Absolutely—so many prescient, pertinent episodes. Humanity would be a lot better off if the K–12 curriculum comprised “Twilight Zone” episodes ;-) The memory of totalitarianism and genocide was still fresh in the minds of Serling and the other TZ writers, and they did their best to try and equip us against future such attempts. Too bad most people failed to listen.

Rod Serling was a prophet of his times, died much too soon. So many great sci-fi writers from the 50s, 60s, and 70s were trying to warn us of what was coming, Bradbury, Philip Dick, asimov, and hell even early Stephen king(before he overdosed on TDS) all warned us about censorship and technocratic governance. This is the main reason globohomo is trying to censor everything and anything they can, books are one of the main weapons we have in the war against tyranny as they can both teach but also inspire future generations.

Scapegoating, Salem-witch style, holocaust style, Turks marching the Armenians into the desert style, is summed up well by Rene Girard’s mimetic theory and crisis. I need to watch that Maple Street episode!

What's also interesting is how "the children" are used to invoke sympathy, and despite the lies, but the very same people, OVERTLY, support rampant and unadulterated abortion. So for them it's an entirely contradictory position anyway.

Serling was a God.
