But if cyprus spills over to two NATO member states at war...one of them with nukes, what does NATO do? Then there's Serbia and Kosovo which has nato split. It's far too complicated to survive any regional or large scale conflict in its current form. It would have been nice if it was dissolved in 1991 but empires need constant expansion.
